Where Tap4Schools is strongest
Tap4Schools is a focused, mature tuckshop product and there are good reasons a school picks it:
- Purpose-built tuckshop hardware — kiosks designed specifically for canteen queues, claimed in 500+ schools.
- Pre-order meal periods — parents can order ahead for a specific break/period, reducing till-side queueing.
- Student-card scan + allergy alerts — point-of-sale safety check built into the till flow.
- Dedicated tuckshop parent app — a focused experience for schools that want tuckshop-only functionality without a broader school-management system.
- Established terminal network — 500+ schools claimed, an established base for a payments-terminal specific product.
If your school only needs a cashless tuckshop till and doesn't run (or doesn't want) a full school-management platform, Tap4Schools is a reasonable, focused choice.
A note on money flow (different architectures)
These products move tuckshop money differently — worth understanding before you commit hardware and a setup fee:
- Tap4Schools operates a wallet model: parents top up into a Tap4Schools-held float, the school spends down that float via terminal sales, and moving the balance to the school's own bank account is a separate cashout action — two are free per month, additional cashouts cost R10 each, and cashouts are only processed Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
- MyEncore routes tuckshop payments through the school or tuckshop operator's own Netcash merchant account. There's no intermediate wallet and no cashout step — funds settle to the school's own bank account the same way any other Netcash payment does. MyEncore charges a flat R250/month per school for the Netcash rail (covering every payment type on the platform — fees, tuckshop, events — not per terminal), and takes no percentage of what parents pay.
Neither model is automatically "better" — a pooled wallet with scheduled cashouts is a normal way to run a payments product. It's a trade-off worth pricing out for your terminal count: at two terminals, Tap4Schools is R250 × 2 = R500/month plus any cashouts beyond the two free ones, against MyEncore's R0/terminal and R250/month flat (shared across every payment type on the platform, not billed per module).
Where MyEncore is different
One app, not two. Parents already have the MyEncore app open for attendance, marks, fees, and news. Tuckshop top-ups and orders live in that same app — no second download, no second login, no second password to manage.
Included, not metered. Tuckshop is part of the R50-per-learner-per-year school subscription. There's no per-terminal fee, no setup fee, and no cashout fee — a school with five tuckshop terminals pays the same as a school with one.
Money goes straight to the school. Payments settle into the school or operator's own Netcash merchant account. MyEncore doesn't hold a wallet float and there's no cashout step to reach the bank.
Honest about what's not built yet. A cashless wallet and wristband-scan till are rolling out. Pre-order meal periods are on our roadmap. We don't offer kiosk hardware or allergy-alert scanning today — if those are must-haves right now, Tap4Schools has them shipped.
Pricing comparison
MyEncore: tuckshop included in R50 per learner per year (R4.17/month) for under-1000-learner schools, with a 5-year taper from R27/learner/year (Y1) for 1000+ learner schools
- No per-terminal fee — R0 regardless of terminal count
- No setup fee, no hardware purchase required to use the module
- No cashout fee — money is never held in a wallet to begin with
- Optional Netcash rail (covers tuckshop, fees, and every other payment type): flat R250/school/month, no percentage taken
Tap4Schools: R500 (remote) or R2,500 (on-site) setup + hardware, then R350/month per terminal (R250/month per terminal at 2+ terminals), ex VAT
- Setup fee due before the first terminal goes live
- Monthly fee scales with the number of terminals a school runs
- Wallet float is held by Tap4Schools; reaching the school's bank requires a cashout
- 2 free cashouts per month, then R10 per cashout, processed Monday/Wednesday/Friday only

Which is right for your school?
Tap4Schools may fit better if:
- You need pre-order meal-period ordering shipped today, not on a roadmap
- You want allergy-alert scanning at the till right now
- Kiosk hardware and a dedicated tuckshop-only parent app are what you're looking for
- You don't run (or don't want) a full school-management platform alongside the tuckshop
MyEncore likely fits better if:
- You'd rather parents use one app for tuckshop and everything else, not two
- You want tuckshop included in the school subscription instead of a per-terminal bill
- You'd rather tuckshop money go straight to the school's own Netcash/bank account than sit in a wallet awaiting cashout
- You're already running (or planning to run) MyEncore for attendance, marks, communication, and fees
Frequently asked questions
Does Tap4Schools cost more than MyEncore's tuckshop? Tap4Schools charges setup fees plus a monthly per-terminal fee plus cashout fees beyond two free per month. MyEncore's tuckshop is included in the R50/learner/year subscription with R0 per terminal, no setup fee, and no cashout fee. Whether Tap4Schools costs more in total depends on your terminal count and cashout frequency — we recommend running the numbers for your own school.
Does MyEncore hold tuckshop money like a wallet provider? No. Payments route through the school or operator's own Netcash merchant account. MyEncore never holds a pooled wallet float, so there's no cashout step or cashout fee to reach the school's bank.
Does MyEncore support pre-order meal periods? Not yet — it's on our roadmap. Tap4Schools has pre-order meal-period ordering shipped today.
Does MyEncore offer kiosk hardware? No. MyEncore's tuckshop runs through the same parent app used for the rest of the school, not dedicated kiosk terminals. Tap4Schools sells purpose-built kiosk hardware.
Is the cashless wallet and wristband scan available yet? It's rolling out. Until it's live at your school, tuckshop payments still work through the app; wristband-scan-at-till is being rolled out progressively.
Can I use Tap4Schools and MyEncore together? There's nothing stopping a school running both, but they'd overlap on the same job (cashless tuckshop payments), so most schools pick one rather than run two tuckshop systems in parallel.
